Desexing
Desexing has many additional benefits other than unwanted litters, such as cheaper council registration fees, reducing aggression issues and urine marking behaviours, reducing their desire to roam as well as reducing the risk of some cancers.
As a day procedure, we provide appointments for spay and neutering on any day of the week (except for weekends). After arrival at the clinic, your pet will undergo a thorough health check to ensure there are no concerns prior to the procedure being performed. We will often recommend a blood test called a pre-anaesthetic profile, especially if your pet is over the age of 8 years old. This is done to assess for any issues that may be going on internally that physical examination may not be able to detect and aids us in providing the best care to your pet. Spaying and neutering surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia, with recovery generally being quite rapid from these routine procedures.
The age at which desexing occurs is not a one-size-fits-all answer! While generally recommendations are from 6 months onwards, there are many factors that may influence desexing age such as sex, breed, size and overall health. For a more in-depth discussion, check out our age of desexing page!
