Parvovirus cases in Rockhampton
9th November 2024
WARNING: Parvovirus is on the rise!
Unfortunately we have had two dogs test positive for Parvovirus this week alone . . .
Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that affects dogs, especially puppies and unvaccinated adult dogs. It mainly targets the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and in some cases, death.
If you notice symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, or diarrhea in your dog, contact us immediately, particularly in young unvaccinated dogs. Early treatment is critical to improving their chances of recovery.
If your dog contracts parvo, the cost of treatment is $3,000 onwards. This includes emergency care, IV fluids, medications, intensive care and hospitalization in our isolation ward, and sometimes even extended stays, depending on the severity of the infection. The process can also be emotionally draining as recovery is uncertain, and not all dogs survive despite intensive care.
Luckily, we have an easy way to prevent this deadly disease - Vaccination. Ensure your puppy gets the full series of vaccinations - normally three, and keep adult dogs up-to-date on their boosters yearly. Vaccination is a fraction of the cost and a far safer option compared to the high-risk and high-cost treatment for parvo. Protect your pet today—vaccinate!
Stay proactive, stay protected, and keep your furry friends healthy!
